Energy laddoos are easy to love. They keep well, they travel in a bag, and they feel like a treat even when they are meant to be good for you. But “healthy” on the front of the pack and what is inside do not always match.
Read the ingredient list first
Ingredients are listed from most to least by weight. If the first item is a sweetener, you are mostly eating a sweet with some nuts in it. You want nuts, seeds, dates or other whole foods near the top.
Know the sweeteners
Sugar, jaggery, honey, dates, syrups: they all add sweetness and calories. Some bring a few minerals along, but your body treats added sugars similarly. Whole fruit such as dates comes with fibre, which slows things down. If a laddoo says it is free of jaggery and sugar, look at what is sweetening it instead, and make sure that suits you.
Check the fat
Nuts and seeds contain fat, and that is fine. They are a main reason these snacks keep you full. What you want to avoid is hydrogenated fat or palm oil added for texture.
Size and portions
An energy laddoo is dense. One is usually a small snack, not a handful. If you are eating several in a sitting, it is dessert.
Freshness matters
Look for a made-on or best-before date. Small batches taste better than something that has sat in a warehouse for months. Store them in an airtight box in a cool, dry place.
Allergies
Nuts are the obvious allergen in these snacks, and many makers use several kinds. If you or your child have an allergy, check the list every time you buy, because recipes change.
Our energy laddoos are made without jaggery and sugar. The ingredients are listed on the product page, and you are welcome to ask us anything before you order.
