Healthy snack ideas for school tiffin and the office desk

Snacks that survive a school bag or a desk drawer, from a food business in Shimoga.

The 4 pm slump is the same whether you are at a desk or in Class 6. You are hungry, there is a packet of biscuits within reach, and you eat all of it. A better plan is to have something decent in the bag before the slump arrives.

What makes a good tiffin or desk snack

It needs to keep without a fridge, not leak or melt, and be filling enough to hold you until dinner. It should also be something you actually want to eat, because a snack that stays in the bag does nothing for anyone.

Ideas that work

Energy laddoos. Small, dense and dry, so they travel well. One with a glass of water is enough for most people.

Millet cookies. A jowar cookie is crumbly, so pack it in a small box rather than loose.

Roasted makhana, chana or peanuts. Cheap, light and salty-crunchy.

Fruit that survives a bag. Apples, bananas, guavas.

Dates with a few almonds. No cooking, no mess.

A few habits that help

Keep a snack tin in your drawer at work and refill it on Mondays. For children, pack a small portion rather than a large one, and include something they have chosen themselves. Check ingredient lists for nuts if your child’s school has a nut-free rule, and drink water, because thirst is often mistaken for hunger.
